Editorial and Opinion Writing
Editorial writing is something I reserve for issues I am truly passionate about. Even though sharing my opinion on a public platform is extremely vulnerable, opinion writing for The Budget helped me become a better writer overall.
Slurs and hate speech are nothing new to our ears. When it comes to things like football games at Lawrence High and other schools, language can get out of hand very quickly.

When a few male students nearby me at a football game told a transgender student to "burn at the stake" or calling the other team slurs, I knew this was something that needed to be fixed, or rather, brought more attention to. Not only because it is horrible behavior, but because this is not the culture LHS has worked for so long to build.

As soon as the school board voted to replace our high school Macbooks with iPads, students were outraged. Not just the decision itself, but more about the limits new devices would have on their learning.
For me, as an AP student and journalist, the switch was not something I was in support of. CTE and arts classes face a major loss, designers wouldn't be able to design, and many programs simply would not work. The day after the decision was announced, I began writing this editorial and published that same day.
Setting up her iPad, sophomore Liz Britt signs in to her new device the day before school starts. “I don’t really like them, I wish that they kept the laptops, but I understand it’s for financial reasons,” Britt said. Photo by Maya Smith
