Pack the House kicks off winter sports

Between the age-old traditions and irreplacable energy of the crowd, Pack the House was a night to remember.

Not only did the event recognize winter athlete’s start to their seasons, but the night was filled with dancing, prizes, and performances. Led by emcees junior Danny Phalen and senior Jackson Green, the night was filled with energy from start to finish.

One participant, freshman Tate Belveal, a participant of the Unified Basketball scrimmage, enjoyed the competitiveness of the scrimmage and the spotlight Unified was given.

“It was good, pretty fun I’d say,” Belveal said. “My favorite part had to be Tavaris shooting threes though, that was insane.”

If participants weren’t scrimmaging, they were dancing. Teachers, teams, and seniors all led their own choreographed routines.

One student heavily involved in planning was senior spirit squad member Shruti Mallik. Mallik was one of several students involved in scheduling, coordinating with administrators, and helping choreograph various dances.

“It was a little bit stressful. There are a lot of things that can go wrong,” Mallik said. “There are a lot of groups, and to find them and meet with them can get complicated.”

A coherent theme amongst students and staff alike is that Pack the House highlights inclusion of all events, not just winter sports.

“Pack the House is special because it’s not just a showcase for winter sports. It’s not just about athletes, it gets people involved that normally aren’t involved.” Mallik said. “It was definitely fun.”

Another standout participant of the night was senior Jack Pfeifer, winner of the half court contest.

“The atmosphere and the energy around the crowd in the jungle was unbeatable,” Pfeifer said. “When I heard the half court shot contest was going on, I knew I had to be in it. I had no idea what was going through my mind at that point, just pure joy and adrenaline.”
